Koh Samui has everything a celebration needs. For groups marking something that matters - a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a long-awaited reunion - the setting, the privacy, and the range of experiences make it an easy place to get right.
Here are some of our recommendations - where to eat, what to charter, and experiences that tend to make a trip memorable.
Private Dining at the Villa
For many guests, the best dinner of the trip happens right here. A private chef, the terrace, an infinity pool lit up at dusk - some evenings, there's nowhere else you'd rather be. Our team arranges private chef dinners regularly - Thai menus, international menus, or a mix of both, served on the terrace with the lights of Chaweng Bay spread out below.
For a celebration dinner, this is usually the first recommendation. It's intimate, personal, and completely tailored to the group.
Restaurants Worth Booking
For evenings out, the northern coast and Bophut area have the strongest concentration of good restaurants - though the best places are spread across the island. Below is a mix - a few places for a genuinely special occasion, and a longer list of the ones worth knowing.
For a special occasion dinner: Tree Tops at Anantara Lawana (eight private salas in a 120-year-old tree, eight-course menu), Long Dtai at Cape Fahn (David Thompson's southern Thai on a small private island, reached by ferry across a 200-metre strait), Dining on the Rocks at Six Senses (clifftop decks with 270-degree views), and Catch in Bo Put (an 11-course tasting menu on Friday and Saturday evenings only). All require advance booking.
For most evenings out, the following list is more useful.
- Supattra Thai Dining, Bangrak - small, intimate, and consistently one of the highest-rated restaurants on the island. Set in an open Thai sala house overlooking mangroves, with a focused menu built around local seafood and fish caught that day. Book ahead.
- Baan Suan Lung Khai - a Michelin Bib Gourmand, hidden within a coconut plantation. Freshly shucked oysters, grilled seafood on a breezy veranda, and daily Southern Thai dishes made from whatever came in that morning.
- Kapi Sator (two locations) - the island's best argument for southern Thai cooking. Fresh lobster dressed in kapi shrimp paste, squid in ink with kaffir lime, food with genuine character. A local favourite that has recently started showing up in international food guides.
- Cafe 69, Bophut - a short walk from Fisherman's Village, rated one of the top three restaurants in the area and quietly one of the best on the island. Chef Vivien's menu is a creative take on southern Thai indigenous cooking - warm, quirky atmosphere, consistently excellent. Book ahead, especially in peak season.
- Sabienglae, Bang Rak - a Koh Samui institution. Seafood, fragrant curries, honest southern Thai cooking, and prices that bear no relation to the quality. The original Lamai branch is the one to go to.
- The Oyster Bar x Samui, Lamai - small and serious. Multiple varieties of fresh oysters, a black truffle ravioli that quietly makes the evening, and good surf-and-turf. Worth booking.
- 2 Fishes, Bophut - beachfront Italian led by a chef with 25 years of experience. Homemade pasta, premium seafood, and an easy walk from Fisherman's Village. Good for a group that wants something relaxed without sacrificing quality.
- The Cliff Bar and Grill, Lamai - solid seafood and Mediterranean, and one of the better sunset terraces on the island.
- Fisherman's Village, Bophut - ten minutes from the villa, and the most enjoyable area on the island for a relaxed group evening. A waterfront strip of restaurants and bars with a Friday night walking street market that takes over the main road. Coco Tam's is the standout - beachfront beanbags, decent cocktails, and fire dancers twice a night.
Our team can arrange reservations for any of the above. If you have a specific night or occasion in mind, let us know when you enquire.
Yacht and Boat Charters
A day on the water is one of the defining experiences of a Koh Samui stay - and for a celebration group, a private charter is the way to do it.
Options range from longtail boats for short island-hopping trips to fully crewed luxury yachts for full-day charters. The most popular routes:
- Ang Thong Marine National Park - 42 uninhabited islands about 30km from Samui. Most full-day charters include snorkelling, kayaking through the emerald lagoons, and a hike to the viewpoint. One of the best days available in Southeast Asia.
- Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan - Koh Tao is one of the most accessible dive destinations in Southeast Asia. The twin-peaked Nang Yuan island is one of the most photographed spots in the Gulf of Thailand.
- Sunset cruise - a shorter half-day option, typically departing late afternoon with champagne and canapés. Ideal for a birthday evening that starts on the water and ends at dinner.
We can arrange yacht charters for guests - from a simple longtail to a fully crewed catamaran. Let us know the date, group size and what you have in mind when you enquire.
Experiences That Make a Celebration
Beyond dining and boats, a few experiences tend to stand out for celebration groups:
- In-villa spa - therapists come to the villa for group massages and treatments. A popular choice for birthdays and hen parties alike. No transfers, no timing stress.
- Thai cooking class - an activity that works for every group. You cook, you eat, you leave with recipes.
- Muay Thai session - for groups who want something active. A private session with a trainer at one of the island's gyms, followed by a recovery swim at the villa.
- Elephant sanctuary visit - an ethical sanctuary - no riding, no performing. The elephants live in a more natural setting and visitors can observe and spend time with them up close. Worth booking early as spaces are limited.
- Beach clubs - Karma Beach (Bophut), boho-chic with an infinity pool and live music evenings. Chi Samui (Bangrak) - a 25-metre saltwater pool, international DJs, and a great food and wine menu. Tembo Beach Club (Bangrak) suits a long afternoon that rolls into the evening. Club SEEN (Chaweng Beach) is a retro-chic beachfront venue with two pools, cabanas, and a day-to-night atmosphere. Worth booking ahead for larger groups.
