Koh Samui has weather year-round, but the seasons are worth understanding - especially when you're planning a group trip around fixed dates. Here's an honest guide to what to expect, and when to book.

The Short Answer

December through April is the most settled window - clear skies, calm seas, warm temperatures. If those months don't work for your group, there are still good reasons to visit at other times of year. Koh Samui has a different weather pattern to the rest of Thailand, which works in your favour for most of the year. And a private villa with a pool and covered terrace is a comfortable place to be whatever the weather does.

Season by Season

December – February: Peak Season

The most reliably dry and sunny months on the island. The sea is calm and clear, temperatures sit between 25°C and 30°C, and the island is at its liveliest - Christmas and New Year in particular bring a great atmosphere. This is also when demand is highest - villas, boats, and restaurants fill up quickly, so if you're planning a group trip in this window, book well in advance.

March – May: Warm and Quieter

Still excellent weather, and noticeably less crowded than peak season. Temperatures climb a little - into the low 30s by April and May - but the island is very pleasant and the sea remains good. April brings Songkran, the Thai New Year festival, if you happen to be here. For groups who want good weather without peak-season competition for availability, this is a strong time to travel.

June – September: The Samui Advantage

Worth knowing: Koh Samui sits on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand, which means it's largely sheltered from the south-west monsoon that brings heavy sustained rain to Phuket and the Andaman Coast between May and October. Koh Samui does see some rain during these months - showers, usually short-lived - but it's a very different experience to the west coast of Thailand. For groups whose dates fall in summer, Koh Samui is a much better choice than most alternatives in the region.

October – November: Wetter Months

The north-east monsoon brings more rain to the Gulf of Thailand from October onwards, with November typically the wettest month of the year. That said, Koh Samui's weather is famously unpredictable - a week in November can be warm and largely dry, just as a week in February can have its moments. If you're travelling in this window, it's worth building some flexibility into plans around boat trips and outdoor activities. At the villa itself - the pool, the terrace, the sala - a rain shower is rarely a problem.

When to Book for a Group

For a group trip with fixed dates and a set number of people, booking earlier than you might for a solo trip is generally a good idea. The more lead time you have, the more options you'll have to work with.
