Koh Samui has something for everyone - from lazy beach days and water sports to jungle waterfalls, elephant sanctuaries, and some of the best street food in Thailand. Here's our guide to 15 things worth putting on your list.

1. The Beaches

Koh Samui is blessed with beaches to suit every mood. Here are the five worth knowing:

2. Water Sports

Jet ski water sports Koh Samui

Chaweng Beach is the main hub for water sports on the island. Jet skiing, water-skiing, parasailing and wakeboarding are all available by the hour. Diving is also available around the nearby islands.

3. Quad Bikes

Quad bike tours through the island's jungle interior are a popular choice - especially with groups looking for something active. Routes wind through rubber plantations, coconut groves and hilltop viewpoints. Tours typically last one to two hours and no experience is needed.

4. Muay Thai Gyms

Muay Thai training gym Koh Samui

Koh Samui has several well-established Muay Thai gyms that welcome tourists for training sessions. Classes are led by professional fighters and cover the basics of stance, footwork and striking. It's a serious workout and a really interesting way to spend a morning - no prior experience required. At Villa Anushka, we can also arrange for a private instructor to come to the villa for personal training sessions - ideal if you'd rather train in your own space.

5. Day Trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park

Ang Thong Marine National Park islands

One of the best day trips from Koh Samui. Ang Thong is an archipelago of 42 uninhabited islands about 30km north-west of Samui, with dramatic limestone cliffs, emerald lagoons and some of the clearest water in the Gulf of Thailand. Most tours include snorkelling, sea kayaking and a hike to a viewpoint with sweeping views across the park. Book ahead in high season.

6. Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)

Big Buddha Temple Wat Phra Yai Koh Samui

One of Samui's most iconic landmarks - a 12-metre golden Buddha seated on a small island on the north coast, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. The surrounding temple complex has smaller shrines, market stalls and great views across the bay. Go early in the morning for a calmer, more atmospheric visit.

7. Na Muang Waterfalls

Na Muang Waterfall Koh Samui

In the jungle interior of the island are two waterfalls worth visiting. Na Muang 1 is the easier of the two - a short walk from the car park leads to a wide purple-tinged waterfall with a natural swimming pool at the base. Na Muang 2 requires a longer hike but is more impressive and considerably less visited. A good half-day trip combined with a quad bike tour nearby.

8. Elephant Sanctuary

Several ethical elephant sanctuaries operate on Koh Samui, where rescued elephants live in a natural jungle environment. Visitors can feed, bathe and walk alongside the elephants without riding them. It's worth doing some research to choose a reputable sanctuary - our team at Villa Anushka is happy to recommend one.

9. Fisherman's Village

Fisherman's Village on the north coast is one of Koh Samui's most charming areas - a preserved row of old Chinese shophouses now home to good restaurants, boutique shops and laid-back beach bars. The Friday Night Walking Street market is a highlight, with street food, live music and local vendors. About 10 minutes from Villa Anushka.

10. Chaweng Beach & Town

Beyond the beach, Chaweng is the island's main commercial hub - lined with restaurants, bars, shops and beach clubs. The main strip comes alive in the evening with everything from casual seafood restaurants to rooftop bars and clubs. If you're after a night out or a full beach day with all the facilities, Chaweng is where you go.

11. Pig Island Boat Tour (Koh Madsum)

A short boat ride south of Koh Samui, Koh Madsum - better known as Pig Island - is a small, beautiful island famous for its resident pigs that wander freely on the beach. Most tours also combine a stop at Koh Tan for snorkelling in crystal clear water. A fun and easy half-day trip, popular with families.

12. Hin Ta & Hin Yai (Grandfather & Grandmother Rocks)

Hin Ta Hin Yai Grandmother Grandfather Rocks Koh Samui

Located near Lamai Beach on the south-east coast, these famous rock formations have become one of Samui's most visited landmarks. The rocks - shaped by centuries of wind and waves - bear an unmistakable resemblance to male and female anatomy, giving rise to the Grandfather and Grandmother names. A quick stop worth making if you're exploring the south of the island.

13. Zip Line

Koh Samui has several zip-line operators, with courses running through the jungle canopy in the island's hilly interior. A fun half-day activity, suitable for most ages and fitness levels.

14. Muay Thai Boxing Stadium

Watching a live Muay Thai fight at Samui's boxing stadium is a memorable evening out. Bouts take place several nights a week, with professional fighters competing across multiple weight classes. The atmosphere is electric - even if you've never watched boxing before, it's hard not to get caught up in it. Check local listings for fight nights during your stay.

15. Thai Cooking Class
